Research

The beginning...

So...you've got a book in you. Or you just want to dig into the past. Need to find topical references and facts, uncover buried secrets or solve mysteries?

The research element of any project should be fun. Finding things (think old maps and buried treasure), but also, in the case of biographies  the interview process (a lot of listening and trust in the process).

The best fun I had was interviewing Michael Stoop, about his father. A real game of chess as I fed him what was out there,  unlocking his mind further.

Writing

The middle...

Once upon a time. They all lived happily ever. The end.

If only writing a book was that easy. It is a little more complicated than that, particularly when you are eyeballing a blank piece of paper...but once you are facing in the right direction, the process flows. Think of it as a jigsaw puzzle. Corners first, edges next, then use the colours and shapes to guide you as you fill the rest in. Writing is a journey. A cathartic one. Enjoy the scenery on the way.

Publishing

The end (almost)...

So...you've got all your ducks in a row. All the research nicely typed up into some sort of story.

Unless you are the greatest writer of the written word, chances are you've got to go your own way. The good news? Self-publishing couldn't be easier. You're already empowered, already in control.

There's the less fun stuff, the editing and proofing (arguably the biggest hills) but both exercises jog your mind still further and tidy up your story.

Then the fun stuff...cover, bios, website, marketing.
